Gary qualified as a doctor from the University of London in 1991 and trained in emergency medicine in the Northwest before becoming a consultant in Emergency Medicine at Royal Bolton Hospital in 2002.

Since 2019 he has been the NHS I & E Northwest Regional Clinical Advisor for Emergency Medicine. He has been an active RCEM examiner since 2004 for both Membership and Fellowship postgraduate examinations. In addition, he is a GMC examiner for the PLAB OSCE and a MERIT doctor for NWAS.
